ALL DRB III UNITS ARE 15-33 YEARS OLD MANUFACTURED FROM 1993-2011. SPECIFIC
COMPONENTS THAT WERE USED TO MAKE THE DRB III WILL FAIL AFTER APPROXIMATELY TEN TO FIFTEEN YEARS AND
CAUSE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS IF NOT SERVICED.
Common faults of a failing DRB III are: BMCI errors, RS232 loss, no boot condition, foul or burning smell, cable ID failure, unable to access or flash modules, update failures, garbage on screen, mixed up display, bad erase errors, revision errors, ghost key presses, pre-write to zero failures, corrupt BIOS, launching application faults, loading flashmem errors, bad program faults, PCMCIA slot failure, calibration errors, missing or garbled serial number and many more.
If your DRB III has not been fully serviced issues will keep getting worse. Do not attempt to repair a DRB III unit as you can inflict more damage. The 3v battery is to power the real time clock only and replacing it will not fix any issues the unit has except not keeping the time & date. Removing the battery will wipe the stored serial number and calibration settings, don't do it.
I have serviced over 750 units for CDJR and other dealerships, independent shops and private owners. I do board level repairs to refurbish units to make sure they function properly. Beware of places that say they "repair" DRB III's as most I have encountered only swap circuit boards until the current issue is resolved but unknowingly not resolving the cause of the issues. The circuit boards they use come from used units and they will eventually exhibit faults as stated above.

If you are sending in your unit for repair please include your contact information inside the package. Send your DRB III unit with the attached PEP module and any PCMICA cards for testing/updating. I do not need your cables, cases, accessories or black leather like glove.

If you buy from anyone else you should expect the unit is in need of service.
At the very least make sure the LCD is in good condition as they are rarely available as replacements. The LCD is one of the weakest parts of the DRB III. The LCD should not have any physical damage to the screen, should free free of hot spots and should not have missing horizontal lines. LCD controller faults can be repaired. The outer lens in replaceable.
If you want to service your own DRB III unit please be well versed in multilayer PCB through-hole soldering, SMD rework and trace damage repairs. Do not use a DRB III to practice your skills. I do charge extra if a unit had repairs or attempted repairs by others. I have most components available for sale and do not mind answering general questions.
